Atak na Kapitol: Zaatakowano go przez breloczek
News of the arrest of 31-year-old Williams in Savannah, Georgia, was reported by ABC News. This is a new case related to the riots known as J6 initiated by federal prosecutors after the presidential elections.
According to the indictment, the charges include assaulting officers, disrupting public order, and disrupting order in the Capitol building. Prosecutors described how Williams allegedly joined supporters of then-President Donald Trump and participated in several violent clashes with officers trying to protect the Capitol. Williams did not plead guilty to the charges.
The former NFL player was captured on camera by one of the police officers. The footage shows him hitting an officer in the head. Other videos show Williams struggling with two officers who were trying to push him away.
The FBI identified Williams, a black man, based on items such as a keychain he wore on his pants. The recordings were compared with images from his social media profiles. An attempt to conceal his face with a mask in this case failed.
Williams was drafted in the fifth round in 2016. He landed with the Detroit Lions but did not make it in the NFL. He also played as a linebacker for the DC Defenders in the XFL. On January 6, 2021, thousands of Donald Trump supporters attacked the Capitol in protest against the results of the November 2020 presidential election. They were incensed by the then-President’s claims that the elections had been rigged. Five people died during the riots, and there were numerous instances of looting and vandalism. The mob also wanted to lynch then-Vice President Mike Pence.
Trump faced charges
So far, over 1,100 people have been arrested for their involvement in the Capitol riots. Many have been convicted, with some receiving lengthy prison sentences. Charges have also been brought against Trump himself. If convicted, he could face up to 55 years in prison.
ABC News suggests that Williams’ arrest is further evidence that the US Department of Justice intends to continue prosecuting individuals suspected of participating in the Capitol siege. This is happening despite Trump’s words, who, shortly after being re-elected, expressed his intention to pardon or commute sentences for his supporters convicted of involvement in the riots.
Following this declaration by the President-elect, the justice system was flooded with requests from individuals seeking to postpone their trials. They are hoping for clemency after Trump’s re-inauguration.
