Donald Trump Jr oskarżony o łamanie prawa podczas polowania na chronione zwierzęta.
Andrea Zanoni, member of the regional assembly of Veneto, and Luana Zanella, a member of the Italian parliament, have submitted two separate parliamentary questions calling on regional and national authorities to take action against the alleged crime.
Killing or possessing this animal is punishable
In a Facebook post on Tuesday, Zanoni claimed to have seen a video of Trump Jr. hunting in the „Natura 2000” protected area in the Venetian lagoon. The son of the US president was seen standing next to a dead ruddy shelduck, a species that is legally protected.
„On the video, you can see Trump Jr. with a ruddy shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea), a very rare duck in all of Europe, protected by the EU Birds Directive and Italian legislation on the protection of wild fauna… Killing or possessing this animal is punishable by law,” Zanoni said.
Hunting in Italy is legal, but strictly regulated. In the nearly six-minute video, which Zanoni referenced, Trump Jr. can be seen hunting ducks in the marshes near Venice. The film promotes the company Field Ethos, which specializes in outdoor adventures. Trump Jr. is a co-founder of the brand and one of its vice presidents.
The narrator in the video explains that the hunt took place on private land, with hunts being conducted no more than once a week and precautionary measures taken to respect the local environment.
„There are a lot of teal, shoveler ducks,” the president’s eldest son described his hunting trophies. He then mentioned that he also shot „a rather unusual duck in this area, I’m not even sure what it’s called in English,” before concluding: „amazing shot.”
The video was not dated, but Field Ethos released a shorter version on YouTube on December 31, 2024. Italian media reported that Trump Jr. was in Venice with his girlfriend at the time.
The Minister of the Environment, Gilberto Pichetto Fratina, was quoted by the ANSA news agency as saying that he is waiting for a report on the alleged incident.
Andy Surabian, a spokesperson for Trump Jr., told Reuters that all participants in the hunt had the necessary permits, hunted on legally permitted land, and it is unclear how the mentioned duck was killed. „Don takes compliance with all hunting rules, regulations, and wildlife conservation very seriously and plans to fully cooperate with any investigation,” he assured.
The incident has sparked controversy and calls for investigation from both environmentalists and political figures. The protection of endangered species and the enforcement of hunting regulations are important issues that need to be addressed to ensure the conservation of wildlife and the preservation of ecosystems.
