Hamas announced on Friday a list of four hostages to be exchanged on Saturday for several dozen Palestinian prisoners. The list includes four Israeli soldiers: Karina Ariew, Daniella Gilboa, Naama Lewi, and Liri Albag.

Israel informed the mediators who facilitated the ceasefire agreement in effect since Sunday that the list violates previous agreements – according to the Israeli Channel 12. The dispute revolves around the order of releasing the hostages. According to the agreement, kidnapped children and non-military women were supposed to be released first, followed by soldiers, then older individuals, men, and finally the remains of slain captives.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu consulted with the heads of security services and decided that the Saturday exchange will proceed, as Hamas’s breach of the agreement is not severe enough to terminate the entire deal – as reported by the Times of Israel.

The first stage of the ceasefire in the over 15-month-long war between Israel and Hamas in the Gaza Strip has been in effect since Sunday. The agreement entails the exchange of 33 Hamas hostages for about 1900 Palestinians held in Israeli prisons.

Already on Sunday, January 19, three female hostages were released in exchange for 90 Palestinian prisoners – women and teenagers. During the October 7, 2023 attack, Hamas kidnapped 251 individuals, with 91 still in captivity. The Israeli army confirms that at least 34 individuals from this group have died.

Times of Israel reported that Hamas assured the involved parties that they maintain the previous agreements, and that the breach of the established order is due to technical complications.

One of the civilian hostages is being held by another terrorist organization, the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, where internal disputes regarding the exchange are ongoing – added Channel 12. The agreed schedule stipulates that for each female hostage, Israel will release 30 Palestinian prisoners, and for each female soldier, 50 will be released. The Israeli prison service has received a list of inmates to be released in the Saturday exchange – as mentioned by the Times of Israel.
