Krzysztof Romanowski otrzymał azyl polityczny na Węgrzech

Gergely Gulyas, chief of staff of Prime Minister Viktor Orban, confirmed in an interview for mandiner.hu portal that Marcin Romanowski has arrived in Hungary. „He has requested political asylum from the Hungarian government. He was granted asylum, in accordance with Hungarian and EU legislation,” Gulyas added.

Marcin Romanowski, a PiS MP, has been sought since Thursday by a European Arrest Warrant. In the evening, his representative Bartosz Lewandowski announced on X platform that the former Deputy Minister of Justice had been granted political asylum in Hungary.

„Hungary granted asylum to Romanowski. The Hungarian government considered the request of MP Marcin Romanowski and granted him international protection under the 2007 asylum law due to actions taken by the Polish government and the Prosecutor’s Office that violated his rights and freedoms,” wrote attorney Lewandowski. According to the lawyer, Romanowski turned to the Hungarian authorities for protection in response to politically motivated actions by the services and the Prosecutor’s Office, which resulted in unlawful deprivation of his liberty and violations of international law.

Additionally, the granting of protection was due to the direct interference and influence of politicians from the current ruling majority in Poland in the ongoing investigation, as evidenced by documents in the possession of MP Romanowski. The wanted MP reportedly provided Hungarian authorities with evidence showing the involvement of services in combating members of opposition parties.

This is the first case of a Polish politician being granted international protection in another country since 1989. Lewandowski emphasized that no other EU country has granted such protection to a Polish politician since Poland joined the organization. The attorney pointed out that Romanowski’s application highlighted the lack of a fair trial in Poland due to the political involvement of some judges openly supporting the current Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar, as well as publicly declaring the need for so-called settlements, i.e., the conviction of politicians from the largest opposition party in Poland.

According to Lewandowski, his client decided to apply for international protection to draw the attention of the international community to the situation in Poland and the political repression affecting opposition parties in the country. The lawyer also stated that the politicization of the investigation began with the takeover of the prosecutor’s office by Minister of Justice Adam Bodnar and Prime Minister Donald Tusk. Subsequently, for several months, law enforcement agencies were reported to commit irregularities, and information from the proceedings was leaked to the media.

The decision to grant international protection „rather blocks the possibility of extraditing such a person, but it is always the decision of the courts of the member state.” The lawyer did not disclose when Romanowski left for Hungary.

Overall, the situation surrounding Marcin Romanowski seeking asylum in Hungary highlights the ongoing political tensions and concerns about the rule of law in Poland. The granting of international protection to a Polish politician by another EU country raises questions about the state of democracy and judicial independence in Poland and the need for international scrutiny to ensure the protection of fundamental rights and freedoms.
