Nowy premier Kanady ostro krytykuje Stany Zjednoczone, Mark Carney przejmuje władzę.

Carney has replaced Justin Trudeau, who announced his resignation at the beginning of January. „Thank you, Canada – for trusting me, for setting challenges for me, and for granting me the privilege of serving the best country and the best people on Earth,” Trudeau wrote on Friday on X. Trudeau, who served as prime minister from 2015 to 2025.

Last Sunday, March 9, with a majority of 85.9% of the votes, Carney won the election for the new leader of the Liberal Party. Immediately during the election evening, he described the USA as a country that can no longer be trusted, especially after the trade war with Canada that began shortly after the inauguration of President Donald Trump. He announced that he will be seeking new relations with the country. Carney will be making his first foreign trip to London and Paris next week.

Carney will have to decide whether to hold early elections. Canadian federal elections were supposed to take place in October of this year, but when Trudeau announced his resignation on January 6 after the election of a new leader of the Liberal Party, he suspended parliamentary work until March 24 of this year.

This means that as the leader of a minority government, Carney may seek support from opposition parties and start a new parliamentary session, announcing the government’s program and necessary laws. He could also announce early elections. According to Canadian media, there is a high probability that he will announce early elections, which would take place in April and May.

Governor General Mary Simon also swore in the new government. For the past few days, Canadian media have reported that the government will be half the size of Trudeau’s government, which included 36 ministers in addition to the prime minister. The new government consists of 22 individuals, many of whom were ministers in the previous government, although some have changed portfolios. Interim Minister of Finance since December, Dominic LeBlanc, will be the Minister of International Trade and Intergovernmental Relations. Former Foreign Minister Melanie Joly, who will continue in this role, will also be responsible for International Development, but her swearing-in will take place on Friday afternoon. Joly is participating in a meeting of G7 foreign ministers. The Ministry of Finance will be taken over by the former Minister of Innovation, Francois-Philippe Champagne.

Changes in the government Anita Anand remains in the government, taking on the position of Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry. Bill Blair will remain as Minister of Defense. Jonathan Wilkinson will continue as Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, and Steven Guilbeault will move from Minister of Environment to Minister of Culture and Canadian Identity. Former Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance Chrystia Freeland, who was one of the top three competitors against Carney in the election for the new leader of the Liberal Party, has returned to the government after leaving Trudeau’s government in December last year and will take on the role of Minister of Transportation and Internal Trade.

According to Canadian political tradition, the beginning and end of the swearing-in ceremony took place with the participation of representatives of Indigenous peoples of Canada.
