NATO condemns attack on critical infrastructure in Estonia
NATO stands in solidarity with its allies and condemns any attacks on critical infrastructure. We are closely monitoring the investigation and are ready to provide further support,” wrote NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte on the X portal, informing about his conversation with Estonian Prime Minister Kristen Michal regarding the incident.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, as the underwater cable EstLink2 connecting Finland and Estonia was damaged. The suspect is the oil tanker EagleS, which has been detained by Finnish authorities. The ship was sailing under the flag of the Cook Islands and is believed to be part of the Russian „shadow fleet” that transports Russian oil. According to maritime tracking services, the EagleS noticeably slowed down at the time of the cable malfunction.
The disruption in the connection did not cause any issues with Finland’s electricity supply. EstLink 2 serves as the second major power link between Finland and Estonia. The total length of the Finnish-Estonian connection is 170 kilometers, with 145 kilometers running under the Gulf of Finland.
The incident has raised concerns about the security of critical infrastructure in the region and the potential impact on energy security. Authorities are investigating the incident to determine the motives and those responsible for the attack on the underwater cable.
NATO’s statement underscores the importance of protecting critical infrastructure from such attacks and highlights the need for international cooperation to ensure the security and stability of the region. The alliance is committed to supporting its allies and partners in upholding these principles and addressing any threats to their security and well-being.
