Romanowski otrzymuje azyl polityczny na Węgrzech
Gergely Gulyas, Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Viktor Orban, confirmed in an interview with mandiner.hu that Marcin Romanowski „arrived in Hungary”. „He has applied to the Hungarian state for political asylum. He has been granted asylum, in accordance with Hungarian and EU legislation,” added Gulyas. PiS MP Marcin Romanowski has been wanted since Thursday under a European Arrest Warrant. In the evening, his representative, Bartosz Lewandowski, informed on platform X that the former Deputy Minister of Justice has been granted political asylum in Hungary. „Hungary has granted asylum to Romanowski. The Hungarian government has considered the request of MP Marcin Romanowski and granted him international protection under the 2007 asylum law in response to actions taken by the Polish government and its subordinate National Prosecutor’s Office violating his rights and freedoms,” wrote attorney Lewandowski. According to the lawyer, „Romanowski turned to the Hungarian authorities for protection in connection with politically motivated actions by security services and the National Prosecutor’s Office, which resulted in, among other things, unlawful deprivation of his liberty and violations of international law”. „Additionally, the reason for granting protection was the direct interference and influence of politicians from the current ruling majority in Poland in the ongoing investigation, as evidenced by documents in the possession of MP Romanowski,” explained the PiS MP’s lawyer. The wanted MP is said to have provided Hungarian authorities with evidence showing „the involvement of security services in combating members of opposition parties”. First Polish politician since 1989 to receive asylum According to attorney Lewandowski, his client indicated in his application that „he cannot count on a fair trial in Poland due to the political involvement of some judges openly supporting the current Minister of Justice, Adam Bodnar, as well as publicly declaring the need for so-called settlements, i.e. sentencing politicians from the largest opposition party in Poland”. The former Deputy Minister of Justice also allegedly pointed out that „the unlawfulness of the current ruling coalition has been confirmed by judgments of the Supreme Court and the Constitutional Tribunal”. „MP Marcin Romanowski has decided to apply for international protection in order to draw the attention of the international community to the situation in Poland and the political repression affecting opposition parties in our country,” emphasized attorney Lewandowski. „My client points out that he can face charges at any time by investigators when the standards of the rule of law are restored in Poland,” he added. The lawyer pointed out that this is the first case of a Polish politician being granted international protection in another country since 1989. „There has been no case where such protection has been granted by another EU country after Poland joined this international organization,” noted attorney Lewandowski. This protection may block the extradition of the PiS MP In the evening, attorney Bartosz Lewandowski held a press conference on the asylum in Hungary for his client. „My client himself applied for international protection. He submitted a 40-page document with various documents and statements by politicians, indicating that this investigation and what happened around him indicates that this process is political in nature. And there is a very strong influence of politicians on this proceedings,” emphasized the lawyer. The lawyer revealed that the Hungarian Minister of Interior has agreed to Romanowski’s request and issued a decision on „the right to asylum, granting him international protection”. Lewandowski argued that the politicization of the investigation began with „the takeover of the prosecutor’s office by Justice Minister Adam Bodnar and Prime Minister Donald Tusk”. Then, for several months, law enforcement agencies were alleged to have committed irregularities, and information from the proceedings was leaked to the media. The lawyer admitted that the decision to grant international protection „rather blocks the possibility of extraditing such a person, but it is always the decision of the courts of the member state”. He did not want to say when Romanowski went to Hungary.
