Uniknęliśmy rejsu na Titanicu: Poczekam do końca podróży, zanim wezmę udział w podróży.

Letter sold to private collector from US for 300,000 pounds

The letter has been sold to a private collector from the United States – announced the auction house Henry Aldridge & Son in Wiltshire, England.

As reported by ABC News, the final price reached 300,000 pounds (399,000 dollars), significantly exceeding the initial estimate of 60,000 pounds. The auction house described the letter as a „unique museum-quality exhibit”.

„It’s a beautiful ship, but I will wait until the end of the journey before passing judgment on it,” wrote Archibald Gracie to a relative on April 10, 1912. It is believed to be the only surviving letter from him.

Saved by other passengers

Gracie boarded the Titanic in Southampton on April 10, 1912. He was assigned a first-class cabin.

During the disaster, he jumped from the ship and managed to climb onto an overturned lifeboat. He was rescued by other passengers. Upon his return to New York, he described his experiences in the book „The Truth About the Titanic,” which is considered one of the most detailed accounts of the disaster. Gracie never fully recovered from hypothermia and passed away at the end of 1912.

The Titanic sank off the coast of Newfoundland after hitting an iceberg. 1,500 people lost their lives in the tragedy.
