Szarabi was one of several Israelis kidnapped on October 7, 2023, and later released, who participated in the March of the Living, commemorating the 6 million Jews murdered during the Holocaust. The Israeli army believes that there are still 24 hostages held by Palestinian terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip, and the bodies of 35 kidnapped individuals are being held.
Hostage testimonies – For Jews, life is sacred, not death. The unwritten agreement between the (Israeli) state and its citizens cannot be broken – all hostages must return home – emphasized Szarabi. He added that during the attack on October 7, he lost his wife and two daughters and went through the nightmare of Hamas captivity, but „chose life,” which gives him strength and hope every morning.
„In this cursed place, the embodiment of Evil, I call, bring back my grandson, bring back all 59 hostages,” also appealed 84-year-old Michael Kupershtein, whose grandson Bar Kupershtein is still imprisoned in the Gaza Strip.
„We will hold accountable those responsible for the bloodshed on October 7 and also during the Holocaust, experienced by our grandparents as a nation; we will not give up,” assured Sharon Szarabi, brother of Eli. „The Holocaust was the Holocaust, and October 7 was a disaster,” added 80-year-old Gadi Moses, who was held captive by Hamas for 482 days. Moses regained his freedom at the end of January. He came to the March of the Living with his daughter, Moran. He added that participating in this event with other released hostages and their families gave him a lot of strength.
Attack on Israel and retaliation in the Gaza Strip On October 7, 2023, Hamas and other Palestinian groups carried out a series of attacks on southern Israel, killing about 1,200 people. This act of terrorism is considered the largest single attack on Jews since the Holocaust and initiated Israel’s ongoing offensive in the Gaza Strip.
During the attack on Israel, 251 people were also kidnapped. 145 hostages were released as part of exchanges accompanying the truces in autumn 2023 and winter 2025 or were rescued as a result of Israeli military operations. The bodies of 48 hostages were also recovered. According to the army, the remains of another 34 are still in the Gaza Strip. Hamas and other organizations also still hold 24 abductees. In Israeli attacks, over 33,000 Palestinians have already been killed, including over 13,000 children. The victims include 484 medics and 224 aid workers. At least 200 journalists have also been killed.
This year’s March of the Living was attended by 80 Holocaust survivors. The event takes place during Israel’s Yom HaShoah holiday, which commemorates the victims of the Holocaust and Jewish resistance during World War II.
